What Are Supported Living Services? A Simple Guide for Families
Supported Living Services (SLS) are designed to help adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities live independently and safely in their own homes. Instead of living in a group home or institutional setting, individuals receive personalized in-home support based on their needs, goals, and daily routines.
Who Are Supported Living Services For?
SLS is for adults 18 years or older who have an intellectual or developmental disability and want to live in an apartment, shared home, or family home with individualized support.
Each person works with their Regional Center—such as VMRC, NBRC, or SARC—to determine what level of support they need. Services are flexible and built around the person’s lifestyle, preferences, and long-term goals.
What Does Supported Living Include?
Supported Living Services may include:
Personal care (bathing, dressing, grooming)
Daily living support (cooking, cleaning, laundry)
Budgeting and money management
Medication reminders
Community participation and transportation
Safety planning and emergency response
Help maintaining stable housing
Support with communication and decision-making
The goal is maximum independence with the right level of assistance.
Why Supported Living Matters
SLS empowers people with disabilities by giving them:
Choice in where and how they live
Independence while still receiving needed help
Privacy and a home environment they control
Opportunities to participate in their community
Stability and consistent support
It’s a highly person-centered service model designed to fit each unique individual.
